During a 100 coin bet battle, The Creator scores a hit at 450ish damage, which led to opponent's trigger card "Blade Shield" activating. Given the low HP nature of The Creator, needless to say, he took the 450ish damage and *poofs*.

I would say so - if it weren't the case he'd be unbelievably overpowered. As it is he is quite the game changer vs. "Weak target" cards.
Other counters include Centaur (the 200 damage ignores his special defensive ability), Hot Ninja (best), and area of effect (AOE) cards.
