Welcome to the game! It's a lot of fun. Check out one of the posts in the new player forum. It's about seven pages of new players looking for friends for this purpose. You can battle each other and it doesn't cost you anything (I think that fits your definition of non-competitive battles). Plus, these battles can be used to earn in-game rewards.
