Why not remove all loss penalties, in laddet aswll, it will keep players playing. They can still not play more than their energy permit.
Coins play a very small commodity once you have most silver, gold and several diamond cards.
After this point the game more or less stops and the only progress forward is daily rewards, hoping for a good ladder position to get the diamonds you need to buy a card.
Remember that in game purchases should be fast forward option, not an requirement.

Today I spoke with a top ten player who recently created a free account for fun. At level 19 he owns about ten diamond cards and has won 44% of his coin bet matches. Mind you he is an excellent player and his win rate is much higher than someone who would be new. I think this is important bc many free players quit before level 20 and those that stick around most likely would be lucky to win 50%. Losing less than 50% I think any new player would expect or be fine with as long as they are having fun. It is not fun to lose. But if you still get a reward you will keep playing. This is the essence of what I am getting at. There is no way to get coins in real matches except ladder and coin bet. But in both instances you lose coins when losing making it hard to gain gold. Also making it less fun to play real matches when losing means losing real gold. One of his complaints was that he was still missing gold cards and he said he only had about 10 diamond cards and of course no legends or epics. One thing he thought could help him was having more of these gold and diamond cards at his level. If new players were rewarded with a free silver card or gold card by leveling up and maybe even diamond or legend card at the higher levels this would push people to wanting to play to level 60. Most people who reach level 60 become pay players. It is a really high percentage. These are people who LOVE the game. They gave the game a chance when they could have quit early on. All in all I thought it would be beneficial to share his story. If free players play, lose, and still feel like they are making progress they'll keep playing. You can award coins to losers to just don't take coins away from those who need it most. Also Isaac made great suggestion. Why not award cards to players each level up? Free players could benefit from free silver or gold cards when they level up early on. And also the best suggestion. Why not a legend card at each level up after 60? This is really no easy feat to accomplish. It takes months for even a dedicated free player. Just knowing that those cards can be obtained will convince some players to stick around. And let's be real. Just about every player level 60 has spent money on this game. It's all about hope and getting players to stick around longer. Then they'll fall in love and become a pay player.

I know lot of new players complain about the game so hard to get a win and become frustrated! So i recently start a new account to feel what it is like to be a new player and would like to share some of my thoughts to ECB and newcomers:
1) Coin Match :
I do think bot is a good idea for new player to get their gold, however i do suggest they should have their account level at least 25+ to start!
2) Ladder :
I tried my best and it is very frustrated because i do not have enough cards to counter and yes my new account only lv 19 today so i wont try more on ladder. Even though i want to get my daily 5 wins diamond bad.
3) Daily reward:
I think the daily reward is the most important part for free player, there u can get decent amount of gold and rubies to buy cards or upgrade your cards. However i would like to make a suggestion on the amount of rubies, it is too less i hope ECB would increase rubies (let say double the amount), which will greatly help on those new players!
4) Daily login reward:
It is a very good idea on helping new comer but again the rubies is way too less for new guys! In my opinion, i rather have a big prize of rubies instead of giving us diamonds! The gold there is good (for buying cards only, Do not go into coin match to waste it lol)
5) New Suggestion:
I think it might be a good idea for ECB to open up shop for new players to buy silver/gold cards! Of cos i hope ECB will allow us to buy with gold(cos free players will be disappointed if they find out even silver/gold coin need diamond to buy too). In that case that might be helpful to those newcomers!

Fully Support!!! ECB one more suggestion and i think its very important.
1) For old player (free player) that had been stay loyal to ECB for more than 1 years should be rewarded maybe legendary or plenty of rubies or whatever that will comform them and (dont let them feel abandoned, or regret for spending so much time on ECB.
Loyal player is more important than Pay player. Epic Cards Battle is a good games really but only problem is lack of (compassion) and (understanding)

I am a "new" player.
I have paid for a few diamonds but will not do that anymore unless I see
it rewards me in the long run.
I can't play as much as I would like, especially the ladder because of the time restrictions
while I do log on everyday to collect coins.
The reward system is therefore the only way to increase my gold and rubies.
With the gold I get I buy Lucky Star pack to get more cards that I can convert to rubies.
With the few rubies I obtain I upgrade the "important" cards a few levels, which all in all,
takes very long time.
As Bookie have pointed out several times, unless you have 50 percent plus win you are going
negative on the gold.
lhs1978 pointed out that new players should not waste gold playing coinbet and Ladder
is frustrating.
What does that tell you and me: That I shouldn't play the game !

I can play campaign and against other players.
Campaign is fun for a short while but playing against other players is why we play this

I see that in my OP that dividing playerbase between quick, pro and hc may not be a good solution
you might want to consider this:
Instead of having PVP options practice, coinbet, cardloot and ladder you have
Friendly, Quickmode, Promode and Hardcore.
Anyone can play friendly and quickmode at any time but promode require player level 10
and hardcore level 20.
In friendly game you don't pay anything to play and you can choose to play against
random player or any of your friends.
You don't win anything except the daily rewards.
In quickmode, promode and hardcore you pay energy to play, this is lost if you win but not if you lose.
Checkboxes (like the one in ladder that allow me to spend more energy to get more dp on win)
set different rewards but it cost more energy.
One checkbox cost ~10 more energy and rewards 50 gold if I win (more for promode and even more for hardcore).
Another checkbox cost ~50 more energy and rewards a random card on win
in quickmode it could be a silvercard, promode gives silver or gold card and hardcore gives silver, gold or diamond card.
Third checkbox cost ~10 more energy and rewards 5 rubies in quick, 10 in pro and 20 in hc.
Last checkbox cost ~10 more energy and rewards DP on win, more in pro and even more in hc.
(energy spent on extra rewards are lost even if you lose).
If I don't set any checkboxes I would play like in practice and the only thing I lose is energy which

One new player did mention to me that winning five matches is no easy task and that it's easy to get frustrated and quit, especially when they've been playing for over an hour. Again, it would not take over an hour if you allowed them to speed up the battles for free rather than purchase boots of speed. You give people coins anyway daily and I believe coins are used to upgrade boots of speed. Instead give boots of speed. Faster games means less frustration for new guy who is taking forever to win his five matches. The cost for the first upgrade is 5000 gold and that is hard to part with for a free player.
To put things in perspective here is an analogy. What if you charged people for sound and special effects? Level 1: 5000 gold. You get to hear the music. Level 2: 10 diamonds. You get to hear the sound effects. Level 3: 49 diamonds. Visual effects from special abilities are unlocked. Level 4: vibrations from special attacks are unlocked.
Of course this would be silly. Why? Because these are all free basic features of any game. You as owners WANT the player to hear the music, you WANT them to hear the sound effects, YOU want them to see and feel the visual effects. This makes the game better not the player. You don't want to charge people to make the game better. You make your money off making the player better and stronger. Well this is exactly what boots of speed is. It's a game effect. It's there to make the game better not the player. It costs 75 diamonds for boots of speed 4. I remember when I got boots of speed 2 and 3 still. The game changed instantly. When it started running so much faster I started to love the game even more. There is nothing worse than a really slow game. Especially if you're losing and trying to reach five wins. Now I can't go back to speed 1. It's very painful to watch such a slow match drag out. I can't imagine how torturous this is for a free player who knows they're gonna lose to watch a three minute battle that they have no chance of winning. Sure there is a surrender option. But you don't charge 5000 gold to unlock the surrender option. Because that makes the game better not the player. Anyway, sometimes it really is these small details that impact the first impressions of a game. I download new games all the time. I give the game maybe an hour of my time. If the first impressions not good I go ahead and delete the game. And who knows maybe that game was much better than the first impression and I would have spent real money on it.

Biggest problem I have when playing is that I am deducted DP when I lose in Ladder. Why is that ?
In few to none competition situations are you losing points when not winning.
This point alone is a huge discuragement for newer players to play ladder at all.
As well as this, the ladder should be open at all times of the day.
Reason (as battlegod points out):
Loyal and dedicated players should get more out of the game than casual players.
If you open up ladder a bit will matter nothing for you as you still only give out the same amount of rewards to the same amount of players.
