Underdog Achievements

Post by wobbiso »

One reward system I am very fond of is what one ctg called: "underdog achievements." If you used a deck containing very unpopular cards and won with them, you were highly rewarded.

It was great because it allowed veteran players to continuously be challenged by having to win with the worst pool of cards (the pool of "underdog" cards was updated frequently, too, keeping strategies fresh), it allowed newbie players to win more often, and it kept from seeing the best decks all the time.

In short, it was BRILLIANT, and I think this game should adopt the same feature.

Great idea!

there's still a problem with leveled up cards though. Even silver cards up above level 20 get both 'expensive' and good. You can't downlevel them though even if you wanted to.

To set this up perhaps it would be neccesary to just pick from a pool of level 1 cards up to gold, where you can also pick 6 if you want to. And then ban or restrict some cards from there (like gargoyle & bears).

Still, difficult to keep this balanced, you'd have to throw in something random. And also it makes it so that you don't need your own cards and as that is nice for us, it probably won't happen!

So.. maybe just restrictions on some cards, downleveling to level 1 (or max 20) and every month some different diamond cards (only 1 allowed)?

Well this is what the card trading game that I played did:
The system calculated the least 100 played cards of the month (probably about 12-15% of its entire card collection).
Players had to keep 28 of their 30 cards in this pool.
Very very common cards required for many decks automatically made it to the underdog pool.

So ya, seems fair to let 1 card be diamond (or your free whatever you want wild card, exclusive to epics), and let the rest meet this underdog pool. You said some cards can be extremely powerful at level 20, which is true... but I doubt these few particularly strong silver/gold cards would make it to the pool (succubus, bear warrior).

New strategies would evolve from Dual Daggers Rouge or Elf Sentry, or Poison Rain... cards that synergize really well with the right deck, which would be interesting to see.
